Solid state lasers and non-linear optics

Many of the developments in photonics enabled technology have been driven by advances inlasers. Participants in the network have been at the forefront of laser development for many years.There continue to be outstanding opportunities for the development of new high power semiconductor, fiber and ceramic lasers for high throughput materials processing, directed energyapplications and sensing applications. The laser market is forecast to grow to $7.4 billion perannum in 2008. Within this total diode pumped solid state lasers grew by over 17%. Our particularstrengths are in areas of tunable fibre microlasers, optical parametric sources, rib waveguides, mid-IR to deep UV sources and active control of lasers using MEMS, CMOS and silicon photonics.
