The Third SU2P Annual Symposium was held at Heriot Watt University on the 23rd and 24th April 2012.

Building on the highly successful Annual SU2P Symposia in 2010 and 2011, the Third Annual SU2P Symposium was held on the 23rd and 24th April 2012 at Heriot-Watt University. The Symposium included a list of exceptional speakers from around the world who presented leading edge research and industrial exploitation over a wide range of photonics and related topics. Over 170 Attendees enjoyed the very best in new photonics and have excellent opportunities for international networking.

An SU2P mission of 20 delegates attended the 2011 SPRC Symposium. Highlights were an SDI reception on the Sunday evening and presnetations to the Symposium by three Scottish SU2P member companies: mLED, SELEX and M2 Lasers.

50 Years of Lasers in Scotland

The study, 50 Years of Lasers in Scotland, finds that sales of laser-enabled photonics were worth £660 million to the Scottish economy in 2009 and that the industry employs 3,000 people in Scotland. The nation currently has 82 companies working in the field of laser-enabled photonics and is in a strong position to continue the growth in the sector which has occurred in each of the last five decades.

I am delighted to announce that arrangements for a day of celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first operation of the laser to be held at the Glasgow Science Centre on the 2nd November 2010.
 
There will be two events during that day. A symposium will run from 12-30 to 5-30 and a celebration of the laser industry in Scotland will run from 5-30 to 7-00.
