The 8th SU2P Symposium will be held on the 5th and 6th of April 2017 at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.

The Symposium speaker programme continues to feature world class speakers who will present and challenge the delegates on innovation, research and exploitation over a wide range of photonics related topics. This year the programme will include student presentations to showcase the immense talent developing in the SU2P community in Scotland. All participants will discover and learn about the latest innovations in photonics and access the excellent opportunities for local and international networking the symposium provides.

Registration Notes

  • Attendance at the SU2P Symposium (and banquet) is £100 for academic and research staff from the collaborating universities (Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, St Andrews, Stanford) and includes lunch and refreshments both days and the banquet on the Wednesday evening.
  • Attendance at the SU2P Symposium is FREE via a refundable fee to students from the collaborating universities (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde, St Andrews, Stanford) and includes lunch and refreshments both days and the banquet. Students will be required to pay the £50 registration fee and claim a refund following registered attendance.
  • Attendance at the SU2P Symposium (and banquet) is an included benefit for SU2P Industrial Partners and includes lunch and refreshments both days and the banquet on the Wednesday evening.
  • Speakers do NOT require to register as they will be registered automatically.
  • Companies may book exhibitor stands for the cost of £400 plus VAT to include the banquet or £300 plus VAT for the conference only.
  • There is a nominal cost of £250 for all other registrants at the SU2P Symposium covering both days of the Symposium and the Banquet.
  • Students from other universities may register for the conference to include lunch and refreshments both days for £50
  • Please ensure that you fully complete the registration process even if there is no fee to pay.

Student Presentations

PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION TO PRESENT MARCH 20TH 2017

You must register for the SU2P Symposium if you intend to apply to give a presentation

As a new feature this year SU2P is calling for applications from students to give a 15 minute presentation in each of the following themes

  • Healthcare and Medicine
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Communications and IT
  • Security and Defence
  • Advanced Manufacturing

There will be a prize awarded to the best Student Presentation

Please submit the following to the SU2P Director carol.scullion@strath.ac.uk

  • a title for your proposed presentation
  • an abstract
  • indicate in which theme you are presenting
  • the name of your supervisor
  • include all your contact details

Applications for presentations will be assessed by SU2P Executive Committee and ONE student per theme will be chosen to present at the symposium.

Presentation Requirements

The subject matter can be the research of an individual or group. Please consult with your supervisor prior to applying to present at the symposium. You need their permission to apply. Ensure you presentation may be delivered in 15 minutes and remember to include time for questions.

Student Presentation Session

If you are selected to present then you will need to send/provide your presentation prior to the symposium to the SU2P Director Carol Scullion.

Call for Posters

PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION TO PRESENT MARCH 27TH 2017

You must register for the SU2P Symposium if you intend to display a poster

SU2P is calling for posters which will be on display during the Symposium and with an opportunity to discuss the posters at a special session. Posters may be on research that is related to the themes of SU2P (and posters on other photonics and related research will be accepted):

  • Healthcare and Medicine
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Communications and IT
  • Security and Defence
  • Advanced Manufacturing

Please submit the following to the SU2P Director carol.scullion@strath.ac.uk

  • a title for your proposed poster
  • a short description
  • indicate which theme/area your poster fits within
  • 1 presentation slide for one minute poster pitch
  • include all your contact details

Posters will be assessed by theme panels and approval will be given to those posters that can be displayed at the SU2P Symposium.

The benefits for researchers involved include:

  • Raise awareness of your research within the international photonics community
  • Exposure to industrial contacts for either involvement in research or as potential future employers
  • An opportunity to promote your work to your photonic peers

Presentation Requirements

The subject matter can be the research of an individual or group. Please leave enough time to enable your supervisor to review your poster title prior to submission.

Poster Session

You will be asked to deliver an A1 portrait poster. The poster sessions will be held during the SU2P Symposium in the University of Edinburgh on 5th and 6th April 2016. You will also be asked to give a one minute pitch presentation of your poster during day one of the symposium.

Discussion around the posters may take place during the lunch and refreshment breaks. There will also be a poster session with drinks prior to the Symposium Banquet.

It is the responsibility of the student to print the poster and ensure that it is ready for the SU2P Symposium. Please ensure that your poster will be ready on time.

Image Competition

You must register for the SU2P Symposium if you intend to submit an image to the competition

Following last year's success SU2P is running the image competition which will be on display during the Symposium and will be judged by an SU2P Panel. Images may be on research and activities that are related to the themes of SU2P (images on other photonics and related research will be accepted):

The images will be presented in a slide show in the closing session of the first day of the symposium and displayed in the foyer of the venue. Images may be on research and activities that are related to the themes of SU2P (and images on other photonics and related research will be accepted):

  • Healthcare and Medicine
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Communications and IT
  • Security and Defence
  • Advanced Manufacturing

Please submit the following to the SU2P Director carol.scullion@strath.ac.uk

  • a title for your proposed image
  • a short description
  • indicate which theme/area your image fits within
  • include all your contact details

The images will be judged by an SU2P Panel on the first day of the Symposium and the winning image awarded at the symposium dinner.

Image Display

Image format for visual display on a pc or large screen. Please confirm permission to use the image for the competition and indicate if images are available for use on the SU2P website and communications materials.

SU2P 2016 Symposium
